I am Luke Kahl, an Human Resource Development major at the University of Houston. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is a very important aspect of any business. To me, it is a step forward in history where people can be less afraid to show themselves in the workplace for who they are not as a cookie cutter mold of a generalized and depersonalized "worker." In a particular sense, including people with invisible disabilities is an aspect of DEI that gets less media attention. What is unseen does not go unnoticed. Invisible disabilities can be physical or mental. People with anxiety, depression, and other possible invisible disabilities may face challenges and their work may be hampered because of their disability. But their disability may go unacknowledged because it is not apparent upon meeting them. Creating awareness and using DEI strategies to help people with invisible disabilities helps them become noticed and understood. When they are noticed and understood they will be able to receive the help they need and put forth better work which in turn helps the organization.
